Because the design department was kind of a catch-all creative group, I was asked for technical advice. In the years that followed that initial meeting, Industry Dive designers and journalists used Datawrapper to create hundreds of data visualizations for news stories.

The solution that appeared to best meet our needs was a relatively new software called Datawrapper I set up an intro call with their team in Germany to learn more about their product roadmap. I then began to look for tools that would allow them to create basic line and bar charts without a designer’s assistance. To address the quality control problems, I asked the newsroom to stop making their own infographics. It was hard to fault the journalists, though - data viz was not their area of expertise, and the company did not yet have any sort of data journalism training.

Unfortunately, many of the visuals the newsroom produced had design and branding issues, especially when viewed on smartphones. The journalists also used a tool called Piktochart to create their own infographics. This meant that the company’s two designers - Kendall Davis and I - had to create desktop and mobile versions of each data visualization requested by a journalist. Each of these publications had its own desktop and mobile website. Trying out new self-serve data viz toolsįebruary 2015 - Industry Dive had 10 full-time editorial staff and many freelancers writing articles for nine business news publications. The space had previously served as Sweetgreen’s corporate headquarters. 📷 In early 2015, Industry Dive moved into a larger office in DC’s Chinatown.
